Should I kiss the vipers fang
Or herald out the death of man-
I am sinking in the Quicksand of my thoughts
David Bowie- Hunky Dory
In Elizabeth Moynihan’s new stage play Quicksand, we explore the life of Joe who has ""Autism Spectrum Condition”. He lives with his mother Joy. Joe is a star programmer working for a global internet company. While at work he takes down a Chinese internet server - To see if he could. He is questioned by the Police and while under house arrest is implicated in the disappearance of a young woman. The tabloid press print his name and the mob come baying for his blood.
The main theme of Quicksand is the idea of ""Trial By Media”, a product of the tabloid press and their need to compete with social media, in a culture of ""Fake News”. We see fact based Journalism becoming a dying art as the tabloids eschew balanced reporting for sensationalism and scapegoating.
Beyond theme at the heart of the play is a relationship between a single, middle aged mother still caring for her vulnerable son into Adulthood as he navigates through the world of online gaming and social media.
