Cardboard City

By Hugh Travers
The New Theatre

A homeless teenage girl has absconded from a state care home and ended up sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin with her older boyfriend who has himself recently aged out of care. When they have a run-in with a veteran rough sleeper, there is immediate contempt and conflict. While a social worker tried to piece together her story, her life on the streets becomes increasingly violent and precarious. What starts out as an argument over turf deteriorates into a vicious cycle of intimidation. But amid the animosity, the possibility of friendship and human kindness could provide a chink of hope and an opportunity for salvation if she can find the courage to break free from her toxic relationship Cardboard City is a play about how nothing is permanent in life except change and hope can be found at even the lowest of ebbs.

The New Theatre wish to acknowledge the The Arts Council, Dublin City Council and Dublin City of Literature UNESCO for their continued support of TNT and all New Writing play readings and productions.
