BOLD MOVES

Ballet Ireland

Experience exhilarating and dynamic choreography by internationally renowned choreographers Ohad Naharin, Aszure Barton and Filipe Portugal in Ballet Ireland’s Bold Moves 2023. Feel the beauty, passion and energy in this stimulating programme of dance this spring.

An audience favourite when performed by Ballet Ireland in 2019, Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16 makes a much-welcomed return. Featuring an eclectic score ranging from Dean Martin to mambo, techno to traditional Israeli music, Minus 16 uses improvisation and Naharin’s acclaimed ‘Gaga’ method, a unique movement language that breaks down old habits, pushing the dancers to challenge themselves in new ways. The popular piece is renowned for its unpredictability and fun that makes each performance of Minus 16 delightfully different for the audience and the dancers.

Aszure Barton’s Happy little things is full of twists and turns like a ride on a West Virginia mountain railroad. A lively and animated work steeped in energetic, physical emotionality and set to music from a variety of artists including the guitarist/composer Bill Frisell and 'Appalachian post-punk solipsist' and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Press have described the work ‘as balanced with whimsy yet highly suffused with poignant nostalgia’ and ‘deep, substantial and beautiful’.

Filipe Portugal returns to Dublin to create a world premiere for Ballet Ireland. All that remains is set to music by Ezio Bosso, is a reflection on the present moment, what connections we create between us and what remains with us. His work Stepping Over wowed audiences in our 2022 season with its dazzling precision and artistic elegance.

Journey to new depths with us this season with these compelling dance works that reveal the expressiveness of the physical and emotional through dance.
