About the play
Joxer Daly is a much-loved character in Sean O’Casey’s masterpiece Juno and the Paycock — a “butty” of Captain Boyle who lives by his wits, loitering in hallways and the surrounding streets hoping to hear something, or pick something up, that might be to his advantage. Eddie Naughton’s play examines the effect of rapidly changing times on this inhabitant of Dublin’s inner city, from the 1913 Lockout through the Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War.
First performed at Bewley’s Cafe Theatre in 2018 under the direction of the much-loved and lamented Karl Shiels, the production enjoyed a successful run at the Viking in 2020, and now Phelim Drew returns to Clontarf in the role. The critics were taken: “Phelim Drew is convincing as Joxer — the archetypal, gravelly Dub” (Sunday Times); “Phelim Drew is perfect for the part. He is every inch a Joxer” (Irish Independent); the Sunday Independent praised his “powerhouse performance as the wild-eyed, shambling figure”, and the Mail on Sunday gave it four stars.
