After a sell‑out premiere in Los Angeles, a sold‑out run at Bewley's Café Theatre and a critically acclaimed BBC Radio adaptation, SHARD — Stewart Roche's gripping Irish folk horror — arrives at the Viking Theatre, Clontarf, for a limited Dublin run from 5 to 16 May 2026. Eleven performances. One man on stage. One island that should never have been lived on.

An Irish folk horror — what's it about?

An isolated island. An idyllic commune of like‑minded people. A chance at a new beginning.

You wouldn't think it to look at him now, but Spooner was once the perfect company man — until an invitation from the enigmatic Kemp drew him into a community where the promise of a different life concealed something far more unsettling. Some places are never meant to be lived in. And in some places, nature has a will of its own.

What the critics are saying

  • ★★★★★ The Arts Review — "SHARD is touched by the aura of brilliance."
  • ★★★★ Irish Mail on Sunday — "One of the most striking performances of this or any year."
  • ★★★★ Sunday Independent — "A gripping Irish folk horror… Fleming is alarmingly good."
  • ★★★★ No More Workhorse — "A triumph of atmosphere and imagination."

The production

Directed by Alan Smyth and performed by Neill Fleming, this taut 60‑minute solo show builds atmosphere through language, sound and a tightening sense of dread. Fleming's performance has earned five‑ and four‑star reviews across Ireland for its precision and intensity — a one‑man masterclass that balances psychological unease with moments of dark humour.

Sound design by Amelia Anello and lighting by Colm Maher heighten the tension throughout. Produced by Elizabeth Boykewich.

Performance dates

SHARD plays the Viking Theatre nightly at 8:00pm (doors 7:45pm) from Tuesday 5 May to Saturday 16 May 2026. There is no Sunday performance.
